well, depends on what you're into...incunabula, their 1st is warm analog
early-90s idm stuff. chiastic slide, their most recent, is cold digital
experimental stuff, still percussive but sounding more like recent coil
stuff...the other stuff is in the middle...as others will say, the best
starting place is the domestic tri repetae which has two eps on as well.
if you think it's too cold/dark/weird, you might want to work backwards
to amber, or if you think it's not experiemental enough try c.slide...

:
: I find Autechre is very hit-or-miss. On any disc, some songs will blow
: me away, but others are very boring. My favorite so far is "Amber". The
: first one, "Incunabula", wasn't very good (although the video for "Bass
: Cadet" is very cool).

I liked Incunabula - it's not as remarkable as Tri Repetae, for instance,
but it has a certain charm to it. Amber's a more ambient piece of work,
very beautiful and probably the most accessible and rewarding of all the
albums.

: The second last one, and I can't remember the name
: of that one, was not bad, but not really worth buying (so I didn't!).

Tri Repetae. Quite harsh and noisy, but accessible at the same time. I'd
say this is probably the best of their releases and I believe if you buy
the US version you get the Anvil Vapre and Garbage EPs thrown in.

: They have a new disc out now, and it has some weird name that I can't
: remember.

Chiastic Slide. Takes the music of Tri Repetae to even further extremes,
very cold and harsh. It's very inaccessible and alien on first listening
but once you get underneath the static and distortion it's actually very
listenable, although you might be put off. It's one you might have to be
patient with...

: Haven't heard it yet. Anyhow, I've heard very good things
: about their live show - very loud, much more noisier renditions of their
: songs. A friend of mine saw them in Winnipeg. Several club kids had
: come to the show, hoping to dance their ass-ass off, but the noise was
: too unbearable for them. One was seen lying face down on the floor with
: his hands over his ears.

Yeah, Autechre are great live. The music is mainly improvised, so you
don't really know where it's going to head off to. They don't really fit
in very well with the techno scene and seem to betraying their early
IDM roots for a more TG/Coil type of innovation. Definitely their sound is
getting more industrial...

First of all, I'd like to thank those that posted and emailed me. I think
I'm going to go with Chaistic Slide. I've listened to Tri Repetae on the
TVT Records web page, and while I liked it, it wasn't quite what I was
looking for. I've heard their more recent releases have been on the more
experimental side, and that sounds up my alley currently (been listening
to Coil presents BLD a lot for the past 2 weeks). So again, thanks for the
opinions, and if you have more to say, feel free to keep posting or
emailing.

Buy Envane. Much cheaper (10 bucks at most), and if you don't like it, then
listen to it again. Also pretty long, like half an hour, so you get a lot of
music for your buck.
It's also (so I hear, my copy of Chiastic slide is sitting under someone's
bed unopened and unlistened to. ARGH) very similar to Chiastic slide, (they
came out at exactly the same time, Envane is a single (sort of) for a song
that's not on Chiastic Slide) and it's absolutely incredibly. I think draun
quarter beats anything on Tri Repetae, and I love that album.

I always thought TriRepetae (and the anvil vapre single) are
Autechre's best, most 'experimental' work. TriRepetae has a more cold,
'industrial' sound than Chiastic Slide (hey, they are both fine
albums, and I don't think you can go wrong with any Autechre release).
TriRepetae sounds like the music of machines, Chisastic Slide sounds
like music made with machines....

I've been an Autechre fan for two years now, it was love at first sight. I
recommend that anyone who is even the least into ambient should buy "Tri
Repeatae". Or at least listen to it. Anyone in here heard of Unit Moebius
by the way?

You should go for "Tri Repetae" which I think, in the US, comes packaged
with the "Garbage" and "Anvil Vapre" EPs. You should also try the
latest album "Chiastic Slide" and the "Envane" EP which, unfortunately,
aren't available domestically in the US at the moment. And, since you like
techno with industrial influences, definitely try "Public Energy No. 1"
by Speedy J and it's accompanying singles, "Ni Go Snix" and "Patterns".

They're also very retro 80's industrial, and not very Autechre-like
(IMO, Tri-Repaete is their worst album). It's still better than 90%
of everything else out there, but there's better Autechre to be had.

Harshness doesn't always translate to goodness. Though there are a
few good songs on Tri-Repaete...

If you get the version of the CD that has the extra EP's, you'll get
"Garbage", which is one of the best songs they've done...

(by the way, Anvil Vapre is where I got my email address from...)

Two words: _Tri Repetae++_

Quite melodic, could be described as minimalist techno, but that doesn't do
it justice. A friend of mine bought it and we used to hear it non-stop. At
about $16-18 for two CDs it's a great buy. To quote him, Tri Repetae++ is
"absolutely fucking brilliant."

Picked this one up at Border's yesterday, and I have to say that I think
it's absolutely brilliant. I like everything Autechre has done to date, but I
wasn't as impressed with Tri Repetae as I was with the earlier stuff (Incunubula
and even Amber). I just found it a bit too inconsistent. If this EP is any
indication of what the next full-length holds for us, then it should be a
must-have.

As usual trying to describe the music is pretty much impossible (not to
mention a bad idea sometimes), but I would say that as far as the rhythmic
indstrument-ation, it follows in the footsteps of Tri Repetae with alot of
distorted
breakbeat style loops that are never intrusive but always complex and attention
grabbing. Sometimes the individual sounds are reminiscent of Aphex Twin
even... What
I liked about the four songs on Envane is what was layered on top of the
rhythm loops. Mostly string-type pads and odd musical sounds which map out some
really breathtaking chord progressions - very beautifully done, especially
on the last track "Draun Quarter".

All IMHO as usual

try the " tri repeate ++ " disc. It is 2 cd and I believe it's even
cheaper than chiastic slide. Alot of the songs differ , some are very
repetative but they draw you in . the regular "tri repeate" without the
++ only has one cd and is the same price. The other disc I beleive is the
garbage & anvil empire eps combined into one. Another good place to start
would be the "anti ep" , it has 3 very very good tracks , and I think it
shows alot of Autechres many styles. One track on it has no repeating drum
bars . You should be able to find that at for around $8.

I love trying to describe their music...i also love being flamed so
here's my description of what Autechre mean to me:
Autechre create, in my imagination, an image of some people who've
discovered some kind of weird alien technology and they've managed
to make the machines sing. But they seem like a band on the brink
of deterioration, as each album progresses they discover more about
the machines but with age the machines are beginning to disintegrate
and they're finding they have to work harder and harder to hold the
flow of sounds together....it's an interesting image but probably
only works for me. It just seems that you can follow the path from
Incunabula (their first album) with pure flowing melodies etc to
Chiastic Slide (their fourth and latest album) broken drums, offset
rhythms, crunchy sounds, weird atmosphere etc and to me it sounds
like they're almost dying (but not in a bad way :)
God I hate having to try and describe what I see in my mind.

Yeah I think that as well.. its like every album they get less and less
warm, and more mechanical and more metallic.. its a bit scary listening
to Chiastic Slide at times. You feel very cold and very alone. Someone
said before that after a while you begin to see some sort of human
element in it all, but I've been listening to it for a while now and I
still find it quite distant.. its good but I'm still unsure of what its
trying to say..

I've seen some listings for Keynell, a 12" album, but I've never heard
anyone say anything about it. If you own this album or have heard a
great deal of it, I'd like to know if it's any good. In order to explain
'good' I'll explain: I enjoy experimental ambient with distortion and
static. If it's anything like electro/EBM/techno, I may pass it by. I've
been rather happy with their previous stuff, so I'll probably buy it
regardless.

it's most similar to the straight ahead tracks on _envane_ and _chiastic_
slide, but less abrasive; simple, loping beats, ambience and alien synth
melodies. not as interesting as most autechre stuff (although still
good!!) and not as fucked up as the originals.

It's actually 2 Autechre remixes of their Gescom (autechre alias) 'Keynell'
track (originally found on the Gescom 'Keynell' EP on Skam records). Chances
are, if you've liked their previous work, you'lllove this. A little more
experimental, but great, nonetheless.

More experimental, but less abrasive? How is it experimental? Repetitive?
Erratic? I'm not quite following. The thing is, if it's nearly as talented as
the usual Autechre than it's sure to be better than buying anything off of the
21st Circuitry label, which is why I don't understand why I bother to care
rather than just buying it. I guess it's curiosity.

Not really. It's kind of in the vien of the recent stuff they've been doing.

How is it experimental?

Well, it's in the Skam vein, which I find more experimental than the usual
Autechre affair. Let's just say the Gescom 'Keynell' EP is one of the more
strange things I've heard from Autechre.

Let's just say, as a rabid Autechre fan, I've never been disappointed with
any Ae/Gescom project.

Great. A little more influenced by elektro and techno, than the Deathfunk EP,
but still has those cool distorted beats. Very sample-heavy, too. Another
great Empire EP.
