[CICHLISUITE ARTICLES]

[Cichlisuite review from the idm mailing list]:

after an order with warpmart, this morsel arrived. while the keynell remix
was a disappointment (certainly not ae's best work), after hearing the
real audio clips i was eager to get my hands on cichlisuite

the mechanical recovery of cichli from the public to whom it was released
is a success:

i could use excessive compliments to describe this release, another ae
masterpiece, but what is coming across with each new record, with each new
track, is the repeated desire to visualize an image or concept with a
particular sonic device or combination of devices. in tilapia, for
instance, a single sample of a beat is repeated at such a speed that it
becomes part of the melody, certainly not its original intention -- much
as a twenty-four frames of film provides one second of kinetic illusion.

i keep hearing criticism of autechre for being formulaic; if making a
track meaningful (read, packed with information) is a formula, then booth
and brown are guilty of self-plagiarism -- and should be encouraged to
cheat for as long as possible.

i give this release 10 out of 10.

ae.cichlisuite.wap96cd

yeesland 6.23
pencha 6.14
characi 7.23
krib 3.11
tilapia 6.15
29.26

yeesland :: an exciting, moving track with the usual conflict of flanged,
varied-speed beats and wistful, distanced melody. one can almost see the
architecture of a building coming to shape with each beat -- as ties,
rivets and beams intersect and rise to tell a story

pencha :: noisebeats fighting with melody, melody fighting back -- imagine
a soundtrack to a digital burglary, with vague authorities closing in
quickly, melody building in tension, only to find the thief disappear in a
flash when the access noise drops out -- the melody remains to look
around, disappointed

characi :: the pattern of the song takes a minute to establish itself as
the patter or backdrop to a flashbulb and telephone symphony. listen to
capacitors charge up in varying speeds and "places" while dialing a phone
number to a busy connection -- most similar to the original cichli, with
filtered chords chiming at the end

krib :: i laughed at the fauxsynthpop beginning at first, but there is
nothing joyful about this piece, both sad and mercilessly short -- perhaps
ae's shortest and most intense bit. picture a glass marble being tossed
into a cup; by who, you ask? a depressed, alienated child with nothing
else to do and no one else to play with, creating a detailed, melancholy
world out of a simple toy

tilapia :: this is a grating piece at first, with chords that sound
amateurish and out-of-place, but these same chords are replaced with a
different sample, reshaping the beat pattern. except for the underlying
strings, i think that every sample here consists of beats, with sounds
longer than, say, an eighth of a second, simply percussion sped up to the
point that it is indistinguishable from other non-beat samples! this is
the illusion of film applied to sound -- good stuff.

don't miss this record

well.. i finally got this and i've listened to the whole thing twice. i
don't know. it's good, but i don't see all the excitement. it seems like
autechre is falling into a formula. shrug. i like it, but i don't think
it's gobsmacking brilliant and whatever everyone is saying. shrug.

totally agree on that one. i'm a huge Ae fan but hadn't listened to any
of their stuff for weeks really, but this new ep combines the elements
that I really liked from Chiastic Slide, the more synth weirdness of
Amber, and some of the more straight ahead beats of Tri Repetae. What's
there not to love?

hell....11/10 from brian.

It's obvious they've been influenced by the likes of Panasonic, Oval, Bola
and some of the Mego stuff like Farmer's Manual and Pita. In fact, it reminds
me more of the Gescom stuff (Esp 'Keynell'), than other Autechre material.

I think it's a rather nice departure from the sinsister and chaotic beats of
'Chiastic Slide' (an album that most likely will make my top 3 this year).
More on the minimal side, but still has that charecterisitc Autechre build
(especially the superb second track). In a way, it harkens back to
'Incunablua' and 'Amber'. I personally think it's a fantastic record.

hmmm, I only have 'Amber' and 'Tri'. asuming that I love 'Amber', and
just think 'tri rep.' is pretty ok... do you think the new album would
be more my style?

Probably not... try Incunabula or Gescom ep... (if your talking about
Chiastic Slide) As for the new single, I've not heard that, so can't
comment. Chiastic Slide is much more abrasive that, say, Amber, imo...

Its all great stuff tho...

But, then, I'd much rather just listen to Boards of Canada 24/7 myself
=)

No. 'Chiastic Slide' is even more grating on the ears than 'Tri-Repaete'. I
personally think 'Chiastic' is their best album, yet, but then again, I love
stuff like Oval, Panasonic and other grating and noisy stuff. You might like
'Incunabula' (my other favorite Ae album).

Hey all, I just grabbed Ae's Cichlisuite.....killer stuff. I've heard some
people say it sounds like formulaic Ae, but I can't see it. Only way it's
formulaic is if you're comparing it to Flutter. The whole EP is more of
their off-kilter hip-hop beats and machine noises, but it sounds so much
fresher than anything I've heard from them since Incunablua....I recommend it
to all.

What I do is with any new act I am buying is I start with the most
recent relase and work my way backwards. So try the Cichli Suite single
which is a double 12" or one CD.

My personal fave I think is the Basscadet Remixes though. The Beuamont
Hannant mix sounds like breaking glass.. although having said that, the
Anvil Vapre single is also brilliant, best track being second peng.

Ok, so I'm perpetually behind everyone else on the list in picking these
things up, but I'll be damned if Cichlisuite isn't some of the best work I've
heard from Ae since Amber or maybe even Incunabula. I heard some of you
mention that it sounded
like generic, formulaic Ae, but I can't really see it. Yes, there ARE some
formulaic elements, but the whole effort sounds tuneful, and fresh. Maybe
I'll change my mind after more listens, but I really like this thing.... As
always, feel free to flame me for my opinion =)

I don't have a tape or cd in my car, so I dunno yet. I'm gonna get one
of those radio transmitters you hook up to a portable and get it thru
FM. I'd love to listen to Ae on my way to school!!!

Vietmx is a popular one, huh? I don't know because I'm the only Ae fan I
know!!
Viet makes me think of an emotion you can't get rid of, just coming in,
and subsiding briefly, then coming back again even louder. Absolutely
beautiful. A few of Aphex's tracks on Selected Works II are like this,
particularly CD1#3 and CD2#1.

Ps what do the numbers mean on the end of the track names?

Please send it, or any articles! My email (NOT the one above!!) is
buzzwagon@juno.com
I just found out from CDnow.com that my copy has been backordered and
won't ship for a while. I guess I'll just have to buy their other
albums, and mentally prepare for Cichlisuite and Chiastic!!! Oh GOD I
can't wait. If what I have heard about cichlisuite is true then I have a
new cd to add to my Big 4.

Yes please do! I'm starved for Ae info. I don't know any people who
like techno so I kind of am swimming in the dark here!

No kidding!! Those are my 2 favorite tracks on Insides. Especially part
one of Out There Somewhere, the alien theme part is so pretty. I can't
wait to get them all!

***********8

I think if I absolutely had to pick one track from Tri Repetae, it would
be stud. The chords in the background, fading in and out after that
crunchy synth, are so pretty, especially at the end when the rhythym
drops out.
Overand is a very close second in my book, I was blown away by it. I
really couldn't pick tho, because I love the whole thing. This is just
one of those records I just cannot say enough about! I will be picking
up their other records soon, although unfortunately I will have to wait
for Cichlisuite and Chiastic.

PS will your articles about Cichli give away surprises or is it not like
that? Can nothing prepare me?
BTW "yeesland" is the name of one of the levels in a video game, I think
either F-Zero for SNES or Space Harrier II for Genesis. Weird, huh?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[another review from the idm mailing list]:
I'd like to add a few brief thoughts about the recent Autechre EP. I
think it's quite good, and am surprised at the some of the 'ho-hum,
another typical Ae release' opinions that a few on the list seem to
share. While the EP shares in part the general timbral quality of
'Envane' and 'Chiastic Slide', the programming is getting more and more
complex, less repetitive. Not all artists need to make major stylistic
shifts between releases (e.g. Speedy J, RDJ) to have something
worthwhile.

What I like in particular about some of the tracks on this EP is that
the rhythms seem to be able to straddle both slow and fast breakbeat
sensibilities - some drum n bass releases switch off and on between slow
breaks and fast ones but Autechre seems to be able to blend the two
seamlessly. Nice to hear the hip-hop influences come through like they
did on 'Envane' and 'Chiastic'. Also a fair amount of the programming
is fairly musical, even melodic - although some of it comes close to the
general style of 'RDJ album', the patterns aren't quite as random and
unstructured. And the surging synth patterns played by drum loops on
"Pencha" really do it for me.

So in the end if it's evolutionary rather than revolutionary that's fine
with me - Brown and Booth just keep pushing grooves in new directions.

FROM A WEBSITE OF VARIOUS REVIEWS:
Autechre - Cichlisuite (Warp)

Wow, Sean Booth and Rob Brown were able to drop
another EP out this year, making three total releases (plus
the Envane EP and the Chiastic Slide disc). The disc says
"mechanically reclaimed by autechre", making one think that
this is a remix EP, and the title makes one think that they're
all remixes of "Cichli" off of Chiastic Slide. I find this hard
to believe, and if it's true, Ae is one of the most talented
groups of this century. I'll look at it as it sounds, 5 new Ae
tracks. The disc leads off with "Yeesland" (dontcha just love
those titles), which has this odd click percussion sound that
makes you think your disc is skipping. An almost traditional
sounding drum beat kicks in, along with some rapid synths
that give the song a very fast paced feeling, which drops
down to a more subdued beat about half way through. The
track ends with some traditional Ae scrapes/grinds/pops, all
in rhythmic sequence. Next, "Pencha" begins with some
really weird rapid tones that wouldn't have sounded too out
of place on the Anti EP. As the song progresses, the speed
is messed with greatly, with parts speeding up to extreme
levels, then dropping to slower ones. After the rapid jumble
of sounds, the song goes out quietly with some soft synth
work. "Characi" starts with one of those unnatural collages
of abstract sounds that eventually mold into odd rhythms.
Oddly enough, the piece stays at it's almost ambient pace.
"Krib"'s opening sounds rather similar to "Winds Over the
Neo-Tokyo" off of the Akira soundtrack, but as all good Ae
tracks do, it changes greatly. It converts from it's rather new
age intro to a track of melancholy synths and idiosyncratic
beats and grinds (all sequenced into a hip-hop sounding
loop). This is probably my favorite track, but it's too damn
short (3 minutes). Cichlisuite ends with "Tilapia", which
takes the boys beats-style and places it into an almost jungle
pattern with very quiet synth work and some weird-ass
sounds layered over it. I really can't do a decent job
describing this, and I don't think many people can. Autechre
is probably the most original group in the whole electronic
(no, I didn't forget the a)/techno/ambient/whatever genre.
Words can't do their art justice. If you dug Envane and
Chiastic, don't ask no questions, just buy this one now. If
you haven't heard the aformentioned two, go out and buy
this one anyway (and don't forget the other two).

Subject: Cichlisuite Thoughts after 10 days.

I've had cichlisuite for about 10 days now, and so far I like it very
much. At first I was a little confused at the chaotic rhythyms, but like
most Ae songs it separates and 'gels' after hearing it the second time,
and keeps improving. It's like that Jello 1-2-3 dessert that takes time
to foam up into layers. It gets better and more foamy the more you
listen... :-)
Anyway, I would be interested in knowing what other people think of this
neat little record. I wish it were a little longer myself!! I love the
sound, the wacky percussion. Ae's percussion has always been odd but I
think Cichli has a very pronounced "wackyness." :-)

"yeesland" - I had weird landscapey ideas before I even heard it,
because "yeesland" is the name of a place in a Sega Genesis game. So
beforehand I kind of had associations. It's my favorite cichli track so
far, with its clicking and popping, and those cool chords. I notice the
Ae boys are using much less reverb... there seems to be less space on
the recent "Envane" and "Cichli". However, it creates contrast, because
when they *do * use it it's like opening up a cave... very cool.
Yeesland seems bittersweet to me, half melancholy and half joyful
exposition. This image in me was probably inspired by the name, and the
candy-color of the disc itself, but it makes me think of a theme you
would hear when arriving in some fantasy place. :-)

"pencha" - This is cool. Definitely wacko at the start, but then that
ostinato theme comes in, and those chords, and it's awesome. It sounds
like trouble.

"characi." I love the little warbling sounds, and squeaks. It reminds me
of the robotic, brassy sound of "902 Quarter" on Envane. Pretty, lovely
chords. It sounds like little birds and things making music, in an
automated junkyard.

"krib." To me this is a good example of that Ae subtlety: at the
begninning, there's a quiet section punctuated by a rhythmic, aperiodic
noise. At least that's what I thought it was when I first heard it, a
random digital squeal. But after I heard it a few times, I realized that
it's a pretty little melody, sort of Satie-like. It's cool in that it's
not explicit, the melody is hidden, a consequence of the overtones in
that sound. Beyond the noise, it falls out and presents itself to the
listener. Probably also an example of their "Chiastic" idea, where
information is implicit in reconstructable form....
the song that follows these tones is very good, the shortest on the
album. I like the string pads, and the warbly echo melody on top.
Especially cool is the jittery, glass-marble percussion.

"tilapia" is another one of Ae's really good "end of record" tracks,
with that spooky edge, and those fuzzy ambient chords. Another example
of their "end of record" thing is "peng" on Anvil Vapre and "Vletr" on
Garbage, and "Rsdio" on Tri Repetae. Bittersweet fadeout.

Anybody know where I can find any good net reviews?

What do you think??

it's brilliant. the second track reminds me of an all night caffeine
binge playing super mario brothers 3. i think it's actually going to
replace _chiastic slide_ as my album of the year (so far). of course,
it'll still be tied with portishead, third eye foundation, etc, etc.

:>Anybody know where I can find any good net reviews?

http://www.netaxs.com/~grievous/spleen.html, which i am responsible for,
has some reviews. i haven't updated it in many months, but there will be
new reviews there soon.

:>Any more supporters for "alt.music.autechre"? How do we go about
:>creating this?

count me as opposed. it's unnecessary, in my opinion - there are hundreds
of groups for artists that are basically dead, due to lack of interest or
sites not wanting to carry another alt.* group. i appreciate your
intention, but i thik RMI, RMA and alt.music.techno are all good venues
for the discussion of Ae.

Don't know if it replaces Chiastic, but it's certainly a great piece of work
(my personal favorite album of the year is Radioheads OK Computer).

BTW, fans of Autechre have to check out a band out of San Francisco called
Matmos. Their debut CD on SF's label Vague Terrain is wonderful. A little
more experimental, but awesome. Fans of Chiastic/Cichli/Skam and Mego take
note!!

I disagree. Sites not wanting to carry an alt.* group is another issue, and
may indeed stop the formation of the group. But "lack of interest"? Then why
are there so many autechre posts on all those newsgroups you mentioned? That's
the interest. I did an altavista search and found hundreds of separate
messages, most on one of those three groups, posted since late July! That's
only three months, and I think that much cross-group interest deserves a
newsgroup. I don't think it will 'die out' because of lack of interest.

Well, there are also tons and tons of Orb posts all over the same newsgroups.
Yet, go to the Orb newsgroup and it's like entereing a ghost town. Nothing.

Also, consider the fact that some guy tried doing an Aphex Twin mailing list
last year and it fell flat within weeks. Then consider the many Aphex Twin
posts that crop up on the newsgroups.

People will always talk about Autechre on newsgroups and on the IDM list, but
I highly doubt people are gonna crowd up an *entire* newsgroup devoted to
them. Seriously, visit the Orb newsgroup sometime.

I agree with you... I *love* cichlisuite, especially Yeesland and
Tilapia. And Krib. :-)

I like it so much I started a tape with it, that I made for a friend. I
made one that started side A with Yeesland, and went through some other
Ae and Brian Eno, som FSOL, Leftfield, Francis Dhomont (from Storm of
Drones) etc. and then ended it all with Vletrmx from garbage. The A side
was "Warm" so had a bunch of peaceful, warm tracks, and the "Cold" side
of the tape was more mechanical, scary, sad.

I like Cichlisuite, in sort of a weird way, but I *REALLY* liked Amber,
Garbage, and Anvyl Vapyr (spelling?). Anybody know any other bands in THAT
vein? (gescom might be a good pick?)

Cichlisuite is not dissapointing to me, I like it, but I feel that it
Autechre mabee haven't lived up to the high musical standards I set for
them after TR++.
